I wrote a few years ago about a 1970s Ludwig cut-badge snare drum that I picked up by accident, and some of the information I found on-line about these somewhat rare instruments. Since then, I’ve tried to keep my eyes open for other examples in the wild.
A beautiful one popped up on eBay recently, and I was immediately intrigued by the interior paper label. The date stamp is November 17, 1971 – the same date as the drum listed in this forum post, and one day later than mine.
Date stamps of the eBay drum, and the one I bought several years ago.
I love that the model numbers are hand-written, and looks like it was done by someone other than the person who did mine. In this case, the model number is 406 – the same number Ludwig uses for the Black Beauty. Mine has the model number 416, likely because it has the super-sensitive strainer instead of the more common P85.
In case you’re curious, this drum was listed on eBay for $1,099 USD and sold pretty quickly. A lot more than I would pay, but a nice addition to someone’s collection.
