The summer of 2012 got off to a great start as we went on a family camping trip over the Canada Day long weekend. Our friends Dave and Caroline invited us to go with their two boys, and although there was a lot of work to do to get ready for our big housing move (more on that later), we were really looking forward to escaping the city for a few days.
I highly recommend camping with friends, especially if those friends are experienced campers and have all the gear that you, sadly, are lacking. It also helps if they have kids that your own kids get along with – four boys seemed a lot easier to take care of than two.
Fishing was a big hit. The lake is teeming with small fish – mostly pumpkinseed sunfish, with what looked like perch and smallmouth bass as well. The boys took turns catching fish and watching them swim around a Rubbermaid container before gently releasing them back into the lake. Each fish got it’s own name (Spike, Speedy, etc.), which was pretty cute.
Our campsite also had a resident chipmunk. The boys were more than happy to fill its tiny cheeks with a seemingly endless supply of peanuts.
Of course, no Canada Day would be complete without sparklers. I wish I knew how to use my camera better for these kinds of shots, but at least a couple of the long-exposure ones worked. I particularly like this one of K – he’s taking it very seriously.
