A couple of weeks ago, a friend sent me a pretty funny e-mail about a 1970’s JC Penney catalogue. The numerous photos of happy models in exceptionally ugly clothes reminded me how fortunate I am to have such limited memories of that decade.
It turns out the e-mail was originally a blog post on the site 15minutelunch.blogspot.com. The actual post can be found by clicking here (if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it).
What I find interesting is that up until October, the blogger, Johnny Virgil, was simply writing a funny blog. He’d usually get around 300 visits a day, which is actually a pretty impressive number.
Then, on October 12, he posted the JC Penney story. Within a few days, it goes viral as friends forward it to friends. By November 2, he peaks at 49,000 visits in one day! The post has more than 500 comments, and suddenly little Johnny Virgil is a big name in the blogosphere.
I think I’ll follow in Johnny V’s footsteps and aim to go viral myself. I have a 1981 BiWay flyer that’s just asking to be scanned and mocked.
I’m so glad you posted that. I laughed until I cried. No kidding. I’m sure the patients in the office are wondering what kind of drugs I’m on.
